Wander Weavers
Behind the Scenes
I travel to escape what a wise character in one of my favorite novels calls “the malady of certainty”.
“Certainty was to curiosity what the sun was to the wings of Icarus. Where one shone forcefully, the other couldn’t survive. With certainty came arrogance; with arrogance, blindness; with blindness, darkness; and with darkness, more certainty. This he called, the converse nature of convictions.”
-Professor Azur, Three Daughters of Eve by Elif Shafak
From a young age, curiosity was my constant companion. I grew up with maps adorning the walls, National Geographic magazines stacked on the shelves, and stories of travel from my father. I’ve been fortunate to travel since childhood, and though some years are more active than others, the desire to explore has never faded.
My journeys have never been about racing to see it all. I travel slowly, leaving space for coffee, marveling, and unexpected conversations. Time is needed to understand the fabric of a place. A journey outward is also one inward, a chance to return to that sense of wonder and possibility that strikes us most clearly in childhood.
I’ve had the privilege to live in a wide range of places: a quiet village in the Alps, the land of Tequila, a calm border town in Texas, and cities like San Francisco, New York, London, and most recently, enchanting Istanbul. Each place has offered a way of seeing that challenged what I thought I knew.
Wander Weavers is a collection of insights gathered across 15 years of travel. The plurality of the name reflects something I hold true which is that even when traveling alone, the experiences are never crafted in isolation. There are always moments of connection. A conversation with a cheesemonger, a playful cat, the whisper of the wind as it moves through the trees.
Curiosity, when given space to observe, can nurture empathy. Travel is a practice in connection. It softens certainty and reminds us to stay open to others, to ourselves, and to the stories waiting to be uncovered.
